I'm really just writing this post so people don't give me crap about not writing a post. But it's too early to write a MOTW (although the last place battle between David K and myself might be epic) because we need to see which teams are actually contenders or not before we start assigning something as a MOTW.
So instead, let's just complain about how terrible week 1 was for fantasy (and I'm not just griping as someone who got effed by the CMC news). Even as it was happening, it felt like there just weren't as many yards, TDs, or fantasy points being scored compared to normal weeks. Not as many big play or TD notifications blowing up the phone. Here's some anomalies from this past week:
- 17 starting QBs didn't break 200 yards passing and only 2 broke 300
- Fewest passing yards per game since 2007
- Only 34 passing TDs (37 in 2023 week 1, 54.8 average in week 1s from 2018-2022)
Obviously passing is only one phase of the game but in today's NFL, we're talking about 60-65% of a team's production. Clearly all the players resting, taking one week of pre-season football away, and contract hold outs are taking a toll on the play on the field. I think this translates to fantasy football as well where some players didn't quite meet preseason expectations (of course some of these could turn out to be busts but there can't be THIS many busts).
Even in our league, I'd say average scoring since we moved to .5 PPR should be 105-110 and only 5 teams hit above 105 with 5 teams failing to crack 100.
Here's hoping for more offensive cohesion and explosion in week 2.
Good luck to all!
